Visiting this site
When you search for a business on our homepage, the words you type are sent through our server to Google's Places service so we can suggest matches. We use your approximate location, which our hosting provider works out from your IP address, only to show nearby businesses first. We don't keep your searches. We do record simple events, such as a preview being viewed, the design shown, and a click on the order button, with the business involved but not your name, email, or IP address. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting.
Business information we keep
Previews are built from information a business has made public on its Google listing: name, address, phone, hours, photos, rating, and reviews. To make previews fast and consistent, we keep some of what we build from it: the colors we pick from the photos, the text we write for the preview, and a record that the preview was made. We also keep lists of local businesses that appear to have no website, with their public name, address, and phone number, which we use to decide whom to contact.
If we contact your business
We may mail a postcard to a business's public address, or email a business, to show it a preview. Every email says who we are, includes our postal address, and has a working unsubscribe link. If you ask us not to contact you, by email or at hello@placefront.com, we add you to a permanent do-not-contact list and never contact you again.
If you order a website
Stripe handles payment; we never see or store your card number. From checkout we receive your name, email, phone, and business name. To build and run your site we keep what you give us: your business details, photos, services, the domain you want, change requests, answers to our questions, and edits you make in your site editor. Your uploaded photos and order files are stored with our hosting provider at private, unguessable addresses. They aren't listed anywhere, but anyone who has the exact link can open a file, so please don't upload anything you wouldn't want on your website. We keep order records for as long as you're a customer, plus whatever period tax and accounting rules require.
Signing in
Your site editor uses a one-time code sent to your email instead of a password. We store a scrambled (hashed) form of your email address and of each code, never the code itself, and set one cookie that keeps you signed in for up to eight hours.
Visitors to your website
If your site has a booking or quote form, what a visitor sends (name, phone, email, and message) is stored so it can be shown on your order page and emailed to you. We handle it on your behalf and don't use it for anything else.
Who we share data with
Only the service providers we use to run the business, each for its own job:
- Vercel: hosting this site and customer sites, and storing files and order records.
- Stripe: payments.
- Google: business listing data (Places), and our own email mailbox (Workspace).
- Lob: printing and mailing postcards to business addresses.
- Outscraper: finding public business listings.
- Resend: sending order emails and sign-in codes.
- Anthropic, and an image service such as OpenAI or Google, when we use them to draft website text, describe photos, or create images for your site. We send business details and photos, never payment information.
We don't sell personal information, and we don't share it with anyone for their own marketing.
Cookies
We set a cookie only when you sign in to your site editor, and our team's dashboard uses one of its own. We don't use tracking or advertising cookies, and we don't run third-party advertising scripts.
Your rights
You can ask what information we hold about you or your business, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@placefront.com and we'll respond within 30 days. Our services are for businesses and aren't directed at children.
